Coping with COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD is one of the most common lung diseases.  It is a condition which causes the lungs are permanently damages and the airways have become restricted.  Breathing is severely encumbered.  The two main types of COPD are bronchitis and emphysema.  Bronchitis is a persistent cough with phlegm and mucous and emphysema involves destruction of the lungs over time.  Most people with COPD suffer from both of these diseases.

There are no cures for COPD.  But there are a number of drugs that can relieve symptoms.  There are inhalers to open air passages such as Atrovent™, Spireva™, Serevent™, Foradil™ or albuterol.  Inhaled steroids that reduce inflammation or Singulair™

Here are some other hints to help someone with the disease.

It cannot be emphasized enough that if you are a smoker, it is imperative that you quit.    Stay away from strong  scented products such as perfumes, aftershave, hairsprays, etc.  It is important to exercise regularly.  Even moderate exercise such as walking is beneficial and will make you feel stronger and healthier.  Check with your doctor as to what is the right amount.    Eat healthy foods in moderate amounts.    Some people find that air from a fan or air conditioner make breathing easier.  Use detergents and other cleaning agents without strong odors.
